GMAT: preparation, delivery process, result

Most experts believe that it is best to start preparing for the GMAT exam two months before the assessment, provided that you know the math in grades 1-6 of the school and have a good command of English.

For three 2 months you will not have time to forget only the mastered theory, and you will have enough time to work out the tasks and sections in which you feel most insecure.

It’s best to start preparing for the GMAT test when your level of English is not lower than Intermediate. This is primarily due to the specifics of the test itself. All instructions and questions will be in English, and you will have to solve fairly complex tasks using special terms. In addition, you must remember that you will also have to write an essay in English in the Analytical Writing Assessment section of the test.

This tip will tell you how to prepare for the GMAT:

In order for the exam to succeed, you must develop a GMAT test preparation strategy. And for this you will have to answer difficult questions:

  • How to write an essay?
  • How to prepare for the exam?
  • How to allocate time for change?
  • Which section is the best place to start preparing?

Developing a strategy is not a simple thing, but it can be solved either with the help of appropriate literature and common sense (taking into account your strengths and weaknesses), or with the help of reputable companies and experienced teachers who can prepare you for assessment as efficiently as possible.

In addition, specialized GMAT exam preparation courses will help to remove the issue of developing a strategy. Here you will receive manuals and listen to a structured course of lectures, learn about fast and effective methods for solving tasks.

What are the main advantages of preparing for testing in specialized courses?

  1. Classes are held with an experienced teacher who will tell you about all the specific features of the test. This will help to avoid standard errors. You will learn about the gaps in your knowledge, you can consult about literature, talk with a person who has already passed the exam on his own.
  2. In the courses you will write a test test and an essay, which will be tested and examined in detail by the teacher.
  3. You will be provided with proven textbooks that have been developed by leading experts in the field of preparation for GMAT.
  4. You will save a lot of time, because you do not have to analyze a huge amount of information that is offered on the network, you will be provided with it in the optimal time.

You can get all of the above at the Moscow GMAT test preparation courses. A wide range of different GMAT courses will be available to you: in terms of knowledge, price and time.

Individual GMAT preparation program

If you are a busy person whose life goes according to a very complicated work schedule, you are constantly traveling and there is no way to regularly attend classes in a group, then individual lessons with a teacher will be the ideal option for preparing for GMAT.

An experienced specialist will be able to quickly and accurately prepare you for the exam, he will develop a special test preparation program for the student personally. In the classroom, you will learn all the necessary information about the intricacies of the exam. Based on the level of your knowledge and training, the tutor will set the right direction for working with the most difficult moments. In addition, the teacher will offer you additional material, advise literature that will help you pass the exam for the desired score.

A tutor conducting a course for preparing for GMAT will develop an individual time management strategy with you that can be used directly for passing an exam. Thanks to such versatile preparation, you will receive an excellent foundation of knowledge for successful passing the test.

GMAT benefits: the best of the best

You can effectively prepare for testing if you study the time-tested textbooks for preparing for GMAT. Naturally, on the Internet you can find a huge number of trial tests, techniques, tips and other information. All this will be useful only if you have already developed your test preparation program. Therefore, do not neglect the basic benefits for preparing for GMAT from the best world experts.

First of all, it is worth paying attention to the following textbooks, in which you will find a large number of test tasks, as well as excellent descriptions of the structure of the test, many useful tips that can be used during the test:

1. What materials to use in the preparation, whether it is worth going to courses, how much time to lay on preparation. is the official site where you register for the exam, pay the fee, etc. But you can also say GMATprep software on it. This application allows you to pass two free trial tests and it has 90 trial questions. There is also a question of the day function.

First of all, decide for yourself whether you can prepare yourself. Self-preparation is possible, but this requires iron willpower and perseverance. In addition, GMAT is a very specific test, it is important not only to know the material, but also to understand its features (tricks, typical mistakes, structure, features). If you (like me) are not at all sure that you can organize yourself, then it makes sense to enroll in courses or hire a tutor. The cost of the courses for preparing for the GMAT varies from 20 to 45 thousand rubles (the level of Moscow in 2017). But it’s important to understand that just taking courses is not enough to get a high score. It will be necessary to work independently, and the weaker your initial knowledge - the longer and more difficult the preparation will be.

Courses are not a panacea, do not expect that you are like courses and magically infiltrate information into your brain. You are not in a fairy tale - you will definitely need to work a lot on your own.

In Moscow, mba stategy, magistrategy, ACET TOURO University are preparing for Gmat.

There are a huge number of tutorials for preparing for the GMAT. The GMAT Official guide, where more than 1000 examples of tasks and also the theoretical information necessary for preparation, is absolutely mandatory. This is an official textbook from the test manufacturer itself, but of course there are other companies that create textbooks, websites, and training courses. The most famous: Mangoosh, Vertasprep, Manhattan, Kaplan, Economist.

There are a lot of video lessons, but in essence they come in three types: those that discuss theory, those that detail tasks and examples, and strategic video lessons on how to allocate time, look for clues in questions or answers, and methods for solving problems (substitution of answers, selection of primes, scientific tyk, eyeballing in geometry). I recommend videos from mometrix, perfectscores, gmatprepnow, veritas prepadvisor, Kaplan gmatprep, brightstorm.

This is an excellent resource for preparing for mathematics, if you are not strong in it, you have forgotten and it is very difficult / boring for you to read the theory. The material is presented very competently, explained in an accessible, intelligible manner and by several methods. An ideal site for those whose weakest part is Quantitative.

An excellent site with a database of questions and clear video explanations for them.

A training test is an important part of preparation, it simulates a real test and helps to understand a) your approximate level, b) weaknesses, c) how much you fit in time.

In addition to the official trial tests, almost every company involved in preparing students for GMAT has trial tests. The most famous: Mangoosh, Vertasprep, Manhattan, Kaplan, Economist.

This resource should be allocated separately. A free weekly course gives you the opportunity to try the interactive training system developed by the company. Easy, convenient, understandable system and the most useful tips that are sure to be useful to you on the day of the exam.

Applications on the phone are convenient in that they are always with you. The most useful seems to me Prep4Gmat. The course consists of theory (audio or text), tasks and tests. The free version allows you to complete about 13% of the course, to complete the full course you need to pay from 10-20 $. Prep4Gmat (or Ready4Gmat) also developed a website where you can use the same resources as on your phone. A convenient feature is the question of the day.

Preparation for the test is a very individual question. You need to start with a test that determines your level. If you have weak English or mathematics is very difficult for you, and you are not sure that you will pass it well the first time, then preparation may take six months or more. There are cases when students retook the GMAT for years to get the coveted ball.

On average, with intensive preparation, 2-3 months are needed. Intensive training means that you dedicate the GMAT at least 1-2 hours every day on weekdays and 2-3 hours on weekends.

GMAT Online Task Banks - a free online job bank that I myself used. It makes it possible to adjust the number and complexity of questions for yourself, as well as solve trial versions of the exam in an unlimited number, - free trial tests and the opportunity to purchase a paid self-training program,

- Other current free task banks can also be found on

Step 4: The solution of the second free trial test (from any source of your choice without Analytical Writing part) and assessment of the dynamics of the results.

Step 5: Work on errors and development of the first two parts (Quantitative and Verbal) + development of the Integrated Reasoning and Analytical Writing parts (2-3 times each).

Step 6: The solution of the mock exam (all parts) several times with an interval of 2-3 days until the confidence and stability of the results.

2) What happens on exam day?

When you register for the exam, carefully check the name, date of birth, citizenship. You are thoroughly checked for GMAT, the conditions are much more stringent than in TOEFL, for example.

It’s better to come to the center in 30 minutes, you need a passport without a cover. You read the terms first. You have no particular choice, you can only agree with them. Disagreement leads to refusal to pass the test. You put your things in a drawer, food-water-medicine, and take out everything that you will use during breaks (you have 2 breaks of 8 minutes) from a bag and put it in the same drawer, but closer to the door.

You can not use the phone, notes during breaks. Close the box, take a passport. You will be given two markers and a large notepad laminated on both sides (11 pages). Then you are registered for the test, documents are checked, and both palms of the hands are scanned.

The traditional test order is AWA + IR, Break, Quantitative, Break, Verbal. By entering the test, you first confirm your identity. Then indicate the 5 universities to which you want to send the results. You can’t take any codes with you, you need to remember the names of universities. Unfortunately, it is not possible to specify universities in advance on the site, as is the case with TOEFL.

When you go out for a break, you raise your hand. The administrator at this moment starts the timer and gives it to you. When the timer rings, you must go back. Each time you exit and enter, they scan your palms and confirm your identity.

When you have completed all the parts, a questionnaire will appear in front of you, which you can fill out in advance on the site. In this case, your answers will already be in the questionnaire and you only need to click. Next, your result appears. You can cancel it (in this case, the report will not be sent anywhere), or accept it (in this case, the official results will be sent to the indicated universities).

If you accepted the results, then unofficial results are printed out to you and you go home. They look like this. You will recognize the score for all sections except Analytical Writing Assignment.

Often they ask how many mistakes can be made to dial 700 for example. In GMAT, everything is not so simple, because it is important not only how many correct and incorrect answers, but also at what point you answered right or wrong.

Very roughly speaking, on the example of my test, in Integrated Reasoning from 12 questions - I had 3 errors. In Quantitative - 8 errors (out of 37). Verbal has 11 errors (out of 41). But again, this is just an example, the same number of correct answers can give very different results, since the test is quantitative and qualitative.

In about 20 days, the official results will come, showing all the grades, including the AWA score.

3. What is a good GMAT score and is it worth retaking the exam if the grade is lower than you expected?

Having read success stories at the very beginning of preparation, each student thinks about a score of 730-750. Toward the end of preparation, you begin to clearly understand how difficult this score is.

First of all, it is worthwhile to understand that only a third of those who pass the exam get a score above 600. Another 15% pass the test above 650 and a very small percentage who pass the exam overcome 700 points. It is believed that for the top 10 schools you need a score of 710-750. A score of 670-700 for the top 25 schools is considered acceptable. A score of 600-650 is considered passing for the top 50-100 schools. Evaluating your results, you should not spread rot yourself if you have not scored 760 the first time. Few people manage to remember this.

The concept of a good ball depends on where exactly you are going. I still think that by passing the GMAT, you should already have a list of universities. This of course does not always happen this way. It is important to check what grade point average for this university. Let's look at an example.

Let's say your score is 650. The average score at this university is 649. 80% of students enrolled in business school scored from 590-710. Your result is not bad, average for this university. But the same score will already be quite low for Wharton business school, where the average score is 730.

A high score is no guarantee that you will be accepted. And a low score also does not mean that you will not be accepted. This is one of the factors that influence decisions. But he is not the only one.

First, when you need a scholarship. If your score is average for a university, then of course with a higher score you will have a higher chance of a scholarship, and the scholarship itself can be much greater.

Secondly, can you really improve your result? Do not go to the test and check your luck. Most likely no luck. It is necessary to analyze your mistakes, prepare again, take mock exams. And only then, after seeing a significant improvement (30-100 points) and progress, go to the exam. Do not waste your money and attempts, there are only 8 of them for life.

Third, look at the entire package of documents. If the GMAT is average or small, but you have a good GPA, experience, career achievements. If everything else is below average, then you should work on the GMAT. After all, you can improve it here and now. But your diploma is gone.

A good article that I personally found very useful, further.

In conclusion, general tips:

1) Learn the theory. You should not have any spaces. Idioms need to be memorized. All formulas should sit very tightly in your head, you will have no time to remember, everything should be brought to automaticity.

2) The mood is important on the day of the exam. Have a good rest, get enough sleep, eat and don't be nervous. The brain does not get tired of information, but of emotions. Of course it is very difficult to control yourself, but try to take the test calmly. Think positively, believe in the result, imagine a good ball. Thoughts are material: if you endlessly repeat "I will not surrender, I will not surrender," then of course you will not surrender.

3) The test is adaptive, so the first 15 questions and the last 5 are more important than the questions in the middle. If you need to sacrifice something, it is better to do it in the middle. The penalty for an unanswered question is more than for a wrong answer. Therefore, monitor the time and periodically check whether you are in time. I usually multiplied the number of questions by two, and so I realized if I had enough time.

4) Do not give up and fight for every question. Sometimes it seems that the issue is not resolved and I really want to miss it. In this case, you should spend another 40 seconds, turn the page and read it again and try to solve it. Even in training tests, I noticed that my score was 30 points higher when I solved such "stupid" questions and did not go on to the next one with the words "oh, oh well it."

5) You should not take textbooks and notes with you, you will not have time to read them. Take food, water, medicine. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes. You sit in front of the computer for almost four hours, it should be comfortable for you.

GMAT courses and training centers

If you feel insecure that you can prepare yourself, or feel that your initial level of knowledge is insufficient for self-preparation and successful passing the exam, then this option is for you. There are many training centers for GMAT, where in a short time they will tell you all the necessary theory, give out literature for preparation, and also provide access to one of the paid online task databases.

The main disadvantage of this strategy is, as you already understood, its price. On average, the price of a good preparatory program starts at 30 thousand rubles.
